Door broncode niet vrij te geven en te bewaken als belangrijk bedrijfseigendom, is er een behoorlijke drempel om een afgeleid initiatief te beginnen. Het kan wel, de oprichters van SAP waren destijds werkzaam bij IBM en hadden de overtuiging dat het beter kon.
Bij open source software is deze drempel zeer laag, waardoor een kleurrijke diversiteit aan min of meer dezelfde toepassingen kan ontstaan.
Ons advies is daarom, zeker bij open source, een goede afweging. Hoe groter uw afhankelijkheid van de te implementeren software, hoe belangrijker het is dat er een substantiële groep gebruikers en ontwikkelaars deelneemt.

De mogelijkheid om over te stappen van leverancier staat ook genoemd in de paragraaf "voordelen". Bedenk wel dat dit alleen het geval is wanneer het aantal gebruikers van een toepassing substantieel is. Slecht dan zal zich een aantal dienstverleners rond de betreffende open source software aanbieden.

Open or closed
Besides open source software there is also closed (or proprietary) software. Making the decision for one of these without a proper selection does not have our preference. Our origin started with the systems of SAP, but we follow all open source initiatives that are complementary or additional to it. Also the position SAP is taking in open source software, is followed by us with great interest and confidence. Good examples of SAP and open source can be found on the SAP database system and open source forums on SDN.

Costs
To get the whole picture, it is important to recognize different types of costs. As there are:
  • implementation costs
  • SLA for maintenance and support
  • license fees and
  • costs of company inefficiency due to software shortcomings


Standard or custom development
The mentioned costs should be the basis for the choice between: standard software, custom developed software or a mix of both in open or closed software.
